    Homemade Cake Frosting
    Buying frosting from the store is easy, but you may find your choice limited and more expensive than what you could make at home. More importantly, store-bought frosting cannot compare in taste with the homemade variety. When you make your own frosting, you control the quality of your ingredients, resulting in a fluffier and better-tasting topping for your cake. Add nuts or candies for flavor and texture, and experiment with coloring. Buttercream frosting, based on confectioners’ sugar and butter, is the most popular type of frosting in the U.S. This recipe makes a light, fluffy bakery-style buttercream frosting.

    1. Assemble the following ingredients:

    • 1/2 cup butter
    • 1/2 cup shortening
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 1/8 teaspoon salt
    • 5 cups confectioners' sugar
    • ¼ whole cup milk

    2. Mix butter and shortening. Add vanilla extract, salt, sugar and whole milk, and beat well until light and fluffy.

    • Add milk or water to thin the consistency of thick frosting.
    • Use food coloring gel or paste for color.
    • Allow the cake to cool completely in order to prevent the frosting from melting.
    • Spread a thin layer of frosting on the cake first to prevent crumbs from showing in the main layer of frosting.  
    • As you cut your cake, dip the knife in hot water and clean after each slice so that frosting will not stick to the blade. 
    • Refrigerate your leftover icing for up to two weeks in an airtight container.

    I just made this stuff and it is crazy awesome and I even added food coloring to make it look like the coolest frosting I've ever seen

    @ Anonymous - Sounds yummy and glad to hear it turned out so good. I like the idea of adding the food coloring to it to give it that extra touch that really sets it apart.

    I make this recipe but use only butter, no shortening...its great for piping decorations.
